African penguins compete with fishing vessels for fish

African Penguins might go extinct in the next 10 years if threats like commercial purse-seine fishing are not tackled effectively.

African #penguins are now listed as Critically Endangered on the #iucn Red List after the number of breeding pairs dropped to 10K in 2023. Factors like shortage of #food, #warming #sea temperatures, changing #ocean currents affecting prey distribution, and competition with commercial purse-seine #fishing is leading to further decline in their population. Efforts to establish more no-fishing zones need to be ramped up as further population decline might lead to disruption in the #marine ecosystem.
