Oil spills endanger people and biodiversity in Ecuador

Shuchita Jha

Oil spills are a growing problem in the Amazonian country of Ecuador. Though over 4,600 oil spill sites were identified by the country's government in 2022, less than half of them have been cleaned up. The rest continue to release hazardous chemicals and heavy metals, polluting the soil and water of the region. This leads to severe health risks and loss of plant and animal biodiversity.
